Are you going to the Carp Market on Saturday? If not, you should as this is THE best time of year to check it out and it is going to be a stunning day weather-wise too! AND if you would like to view our incredibly beautiful executive townhome that overlooks the Carp River just let us know and we will meet you there. We are on standby for you!! Check out the pictures here.

SO what should you definitely buy at the market? Apples…Brussels sprouts…bacon…garlic…and then enjoy the following recipe! Don’t love Brussels sprouts? Trust me…add bacon to anything and it is amazing!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed
  • 4 bacon slices
  • 1 apple, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tbsp minced shallots
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 dry white wine
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 freshly shaved Parmesan cheese

Method:

  1. Cut Brussels sprouts in half, and cut into shreds.
  2. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes or until crisp, remove bacon, and drain on paper towels, reserving tbsp drippings in skillet. Crumble bacon.
  3. Saute apple, shallots, and garlic in hot drippings over medium-high heat for 3 minutes. Stir in wine and next 3 ingredients, stirring to loosen particles from bottom of skillet. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Add Brussels sprouts, saute 8 to 10 minutes or until sprouts are crisp tender. Top with shaved parmesan cheese and crumbled bacon. Serve immediately.
PS…my spelling lesson was learned today! Yes, the vegetable is spelled with an “s” at the end of both words: Brussels sprouts (or Brussels sprout for the singular form).

Spelling Details:

  • Capital “B”: The word Brussels is capitalized because the vegetable is named after the city of Brussels in Belgium.
  • The first “s”: the city name itself ends in an “s”. Dropping it (writing “brussel”) is a very common spelling mistake.
  • The second “s”: The word “sprouts” is plural because you normally eat more than one small bud at a time.
